Ex-President Margvelashvili insulted penitentiary system employees by spreading lies, Justice Minister says

29.12.22 17:30

Giorgi Margvelashvili [former President of Georgia] stated that convicted persons are tortured to death in Georgia. This “opinion” is a lie and a groundless manipulative accusation, Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze wrote on Facebook.

According to him, Giorgi Margvelashvili should behave in the best interests of the state.

“A person who was the President of Georgia had the responsibility of the head of state and the greatest honour to be the supreme commander of the defense forces, constantly, including after term expiration, should act within the national interests of the state.

By slandering the government and civil servants, the former President appeared to the public as a member of the radical opposition obsessed with regaining power, which seeks to harm the country’s domestic and foreign image through any means. As ex-President, he should also consider that by spreading lies about torture, he insults hundreds of worthy employees of the penitentiary system, which is utterly unacceptable,” he said.
