Over 130 former high-ranking officials released a joint statement in connection with ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s case. The fourth president of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili published the statement on Facebook.

Based on the statement, the ex-president should be immediately sent for medical treatment abroad on “humanity and civilized principles.” Members of the Medical Consilium said the patient’s health state rapidly deteriorated over the last 2 months, the ex-president lost 30% of his weight. The inquiry of foreign physicians over heavy metals detection remains unanswered.

Other independent experts concluded a violation of human rights and inhuman treatment. American experts speak about psychological and neurologic disorders. The process may lead to a fatal result. Torture is a crime and contradicts Georgia’s internationally taken commitments. The government will be accountable for the ex-president’s death. His death will have negative outcomes both internally and internationally.

The statement says that the historical process is going on in Europe. Ukraine is fighting against Russian aggression. Therefore, the verdict against Putin’s “private enemy” will be decisive.

“Regardless of political differences, we must not be drawn into the vortex of revenge; We, the citizens of Georgia, should not allow President Mikheil Saakashvili to die by torture. He should be sent abroad for treatment immediately. This is the goal and the correct move based on the principles of history, political expediency, humanism and civility. We urge you to unite for this purpose,” reads the statement.

The next court hearing into imprisoned Georgian ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s jail term has been slated for December 29.
