Representatives of the opposition parties of the Parliament of Georgia issued a joint statement. As mentioned in the statement of MPs Levan Ioseliani, Iago Khvichia, Vakhtang Megrelishvili, Aleko Elisashvili, Herman Sabo and Aleksandre Rakviashvili, it is time to end the practice of aimless confrontations in Georgian politics, where the political climate is determined only by two opposing political forces, who are focused not on solving real problems, but on mutual accusations and satisfaction of personal political ambitions.
"It is clear that the fulfillment of the 12-point recommendations of the European Union is the only condition for Georgia to receive candidate status for the European Union membership, which is supported by 85% of the population of our country.
The very first point calls on the parties to eliminate political polarization. Efforts to eliminate political polarization should not be spared by any party that is active in the political field today, and the steps to be taken for this purpose should be full of the spirit of the April 19 agreement.
It is a fact that today's polarized environment in the political field is not the situation characteristic of developed democracies. In the history of independent Georgia, it was the polarization and rivalry between the political parties that represented the main obstacle to the development of the Georgian state.
The European Union, which is a unique and successful political union of democratic states, calls us to change this situation. It is the commitment to the democratic principles and the solidity of the institutions in the European Union that guarantee the peace, prosperity and freedom that it offers to its member states.
The steps to be taken and the action plan for obtaining the status of a member state of the European Union are given in both the 12-point plan and the April 19 agreement.
It's time to end the practice of aimless confrontations in the Georgian politics, where the political climate is determined only by two opposing political forces, whose agenda is not focused on solving substantive problems, but on mutual accusations and satisfaction of personal political ambitions.
In order to obtain the status of a candidate country of the European Union and to end polarization, it is vital to establish a pluralistic political environment in the country, where the most important issues for the country will be resolved not by one person, but on the basis of the involvement of various political actors”, reads the statement.
According to the MPs, establishing a similar political tradition will ultimately be a step forward, both towards the European Union and the establishment of a consolidated democracy in the country. In order to achieve this goal, the MPs believe that three main steps must be taken: 1. In terms of depolarization and formation of a pluralistic environment, special importance is attached to the adoption of the constitutional amendments, at least in the second reading. The constitutional amendments provide for holding the next elections of the Parliament of Georgia in a fully proportional manner, under the conditions of a 2% electoral threshold, which is directly provided for in the April 19 agreement. According to the MPs, the second most important step towards depolarization will also be the exit of Mikheil Saakashvili from the Georgian political space, which will reduce polarization. And the last step named by MPs is the return of Bidzina Ivanishvili to politics.
“The recent events have shown that he is not far from Georgian politics. In terms of reducing polarization, which includes fulfilling the obligation of de-oligarchization, it is necessary to return Bidzina Ivanishvili to Georgian politics. In order for the country to return to the correct constitutional framework, political responsibility for the processes should be taken by those who make decisions or have all the resources to make these decisions. It is necessary for all formal political actors, especially someone as influential as Bidzina Ivanishvili, to return to the Georgian political space and as a political decision-making entity, together with his political team, take responsibility and participate in the next parliamentary elections within the framework of this responsibility”, reads the statement.
