Mikheil Sarjveladze: Talking about specific candidacies for the Public Defender’s post is damaging the process

03.08.22 17:30

Regardless of my positive or negative attitude towards any candidate, today we are not ready to talk about specific candidates. Moreover, this will damage the process, which should be carried out according to the 12-point plan, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, Mikheil Sarjveladze, told journalists, when asked whether candidacies of Tamar Chugoshvili and Zaza Khutsishvili are being considered for the ombudsman’s position.

According to Sarjveladze, it is now important to discuss the procedures and not specific individuals.

"If we now start talking about specific candidates, I think we will harm the process, which should be carried out according to the 12-point plan. On the basis of the review and evaluation of the procedures, it should be analyzed how it is better to select the most optimal candidate that will be able to perform the functions of the Public Defender most effectively. Talking about candidacies in advance is damaging the process that should be carried out within the framework of the 12-point plan. I don't know who is spreading this information, but regardless of my positive or negative attitude towards any candidacy, today we are not ready to talk about specific candidates. I would even say that this may damage the process, because it is important to discuss the procedures of selecting the best candidates independently of specific individuals. I have no opinion on this and even if I had, I would refrain from talking about specific candidates," said Sarjveladze.

According to the information spread by Rustavi 2, the candidacies of Tamar Chugoshvili and Zaza Khutsishvili are being considered for the post of the Public Defender. The media has also reported about the candidacy of Nikoloz Tatulashvili.
