Lyudmyla Denisova: I call on the world community to respond to the violation of the rights of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili!

22.04.22 12:00

I am concerned about the deteriorating health condition of the Ukrainian citizen, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the National Reform Council of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili, Public Defender of Ukraine Lyudmyla Denisova writes on Facebook.

According to Denisova, independent doctors have not been allowed to see Mikheil Saakashvili since December last year.

"He asked for a doctor's help during a court hearing in Tbilisi City Court. Mikheil's articulation was disturbed and his legs began to fail. He is practically unable to eat. As a result, he has lost about 12 kilograms and constantly feels weak and has insomnia.

Independent doctors have not been allowed to enter the Rustavi penitentiary facility where Mikheil is being detained since December last year. This indicates a lack of proper treatment, determined by a consortium of medics assembled at the request of the People's Defender of Georgia, which is tantamount to torture.

The 2021 US State Department report emphasizes the inhuman and degrading treatment of Mikheil Saakashvili in the Georgian prison.

I call on the Georgian authorities to provide Mikheil Saakashvili with adequate medical care and to comply with international law - in particular, Article 3 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, sets out no one shall be subjected to torture or to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

In the courtroom, Mikheil said that he was concerned about the consequences of Russia's military action against Ukraine, would like to be here and help the heroic people of Ukraine.

I call on the world community to respond to the violation of the rights of Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Saakashvili!" Denisova writes.
