Prominent Georgian tennis player Nikoloz Basilashvili has gained a brilliant and, at the same time, quite unexpected victory in Wimbledon championship against British player James Ward on July 2.
The tense five-set marathon lasted three hours and 31 minutes, seeing James Ward defeated after winning the opening two sets against 18th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The British player seemed to control the match until dropping a serve at 4-4 in the third set.
From there, Basilashvili took the initiative and started playing confidently, not giving his opponent a chance and defeating him with a score 2:6 4:6 6:4 6:4 8:6 to set up a second-round clash with another British player, Dan Evans.
Nikoloz Basilashvili, born 23 February 1992, is a Georgian professional tennis player. In July 2018, he made it into the main draw of the German Open in Hamburg as a qualifier and went on to win the tournament, defeating Leonardo Mayer in the final and becoming the first Georgian player ever to win an ATP tournament. In October 2018, Basilashvili won his second ATP title at the China Open by defeating world No. 4 Juan Martín del Potro in the final. He achieved a career-high ATP singles ranking of world No. 16 on 27 May 2019.
