Bettina Patricia Boughani, the newly appointed Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia, has welcomed the temporary opening of Odzisi and Karzmani crossing points between the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region and the rest of Georgia by the de facto authorities in the region for the upcoming Orthodox Easter celebrations.

In a statement released by the EUMM on Thursday, Boughani said citizens on both sides of the administrative boundary line would be able to “reunite with their families and visit religious sites” via the temporary opening of the crossing points between May 3-6.

The official noted Co-facilitators in the Ergneti Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism format, a platform for facilitating talks between Georgian agencies and de facto authorities in the occupied regions, continued to advocate for the “full reopening of all crossing points”.

The Mission Head also said freedom of movement restrictions were having a “negative impact on the daily life of the conflict-affected population”.
