Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday met Ilia Topuria, the Georgian professional mixed martial artist and the new UFC featherweight world champion.

Kobakhidze congratulated Topuria on winning the UFC belt and noted that his victory was “very praiseworthy and important” for Georgia and the Georgian people.

Kobakhidze also asked about Topuria’s plans and wished him success.

The Prime Minister stressed that it was “important” that Topuria retained Georgian citizenship as he had been granted Spanish citizenship.

The Government head appealed to the Ministry of Justice and the President to do everything to retain the Georgian citizenship of Topuria.

Topuria will unveil UFC featherweight belt on Thursday at Dinamo Arena stadium in Tbilisi before the kick-off the UEFA Euro 2024 playoff match between the Georgian national football team and Luxembourg.

Topuria on February 18 knocked out his Australian rival Alexander Volkanovski in the second round of the main event of UFC 298 to become the new featherweight world champion.
