Parliament failed to elect Public Defender. None of the 19 candidates presented to the Parliament were elected. Taking into account the Constitution and legislation of Georgia, the Parliament should have elected the Public Defender for a term of 6 years, with a majority of not less than three-fifths of the full composition. This is 90 votes, which no parliamentary party has, and a political agreement was needed.
A total of 19 persons applied for the post of Ombudsman. Among them, the parliamentary opposition supported the candidacies of Ana Abashidze, Giorgi Burjanadze and Nazi Janezashvili for the post of Public Defender. The proposal of the ruling team was that the Parliament should make a decision between the following five candidates: - Lela Gaprindashvili, Tinatin Erkvania, Nugzar Kokhreidze, Giorgi Mariamidze and Ketevan Chachava. In the end, the majority did not vote for any candidate.
The candidates nominated for the post of Ombudsman were: Ana Abashidze, Nazi Janezashvili, Nugzar Kokhreidze, Giorgi Burjanadze, Sergo Makharadze, Marika Arevadze, Tinatin Erkvania, Giorgi Mariamidze, Lela Gaprindashvili, Ketevan Chachava, Sofia Demetrashvili, Nikoloz Nikoladze, Aleksandre Kobaidze, Iago Khvichia, Jemal Natelashvili, Levan Kokorashvili, Giorgi Tsobekhia, Maka Mindiashvili and Evgenia Tavadze.
