This kind of political persecution of the critics of the government under Irakli Gharibashvili is putting Georgia's EU perspective at risk, MEP Rasa Juknevičienė writes in connection with Nika Gvaramia's verdict.

"Today Tbilisi Court of Appeals announced its decision on Nika Gvaramia's case. Nika will remain imprisoned for ~4 years. I strongly condemn this decision of the Court. It's yet another case which highlights the mistrust of the Georgian judicial system.

This kind of political persecution of the critics of the government under Irakli Gharibashvili is putting Georgia's EU perspective at risk. Such actions go against the EU Commission recommendations. Most importantly, such actions go against the will of the Georgian People," Juknevičienė tweeted.

For information, Tbilisi Court of Appeals found Nika Gvaramia, the founder of Mtavari TV, guilty. Accordingly, the imprisonment imposed on him by the Tbilisi City Court for 3 years and 6 months remained in force. In addition, the Court of Appeals convicted Nika Gvaramia for abuse of office in the episode of embezzlement of 6 million 700 000 GEL. The 50,000 GEL fine was replaced by imprisonment, but in the end, he will have to stay in prison for the previously determined period of 3 years and 6 months.
