Mayor vows 'fastest, most accessible' public transportation after rehabilitating major routes

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze reviewed traffic congestion solutions on Wednesday, promising that after renovation work on primary roads, public transportation will be the “quickest, most accessible, and most convenient.”

 

Kaladze asserts the city should first address the 12 “problematic junctions” that are generating traffic congestion. “Specific projects are needed, however, they will not be done in a single day.”

 

“We’ve fixed crucial crossroads like Tamar Mepe Avenue and Tamarashvili Street, and the Didi Dighomi junction will be finished soon. Ketevan Dedopali Avenue and Melikishvili Avenue are now being rehabilitated.”

 

The Mayor also blamed traffic congestion on the excessive number of private vehicles, stating that “around 460,000 cars were on the road during peak hours last year, now the number has climbed to 590,000, which is a concern.”

 

In a nod to planned efforts to address the issue, the Mayor stated that the City Hall intends to procure 18-meter buses and implement the second phase of the Tbilisi Taxi Reform in due course.
