Georgian Dream wants to extend the term of the existing composition of the Central Election Commission and ensure that there is a majority controlled by them in the Commission, National Movement MP Levan Bezhashvili told journalists, responding to the violation of deadlines related to the process of electing the CEC chairman and candidates for CEC membership.
According to him, Georgian Dream is delaying the discussion of the issue.
"The Central Election Commission is the main lever by which Georgian Dream rigged the elections. Naturally, it is crucial for them to fully staff the CEC by themselves for the future governmental struggle. That is why they are delaying the process, whereas the President has already nominated the relevant candidates, including the chairmanship candidate, and they are blocking the discussion of this issue, in order to extend the term of the existing composition on the one hand, and on the other hand to ensure that there is a majority controlled by them in the CEC," Bezhashvili said.
The deadlines related to the process of electing the CEC chairman and CEC membership candidates are likely to be violated. According to the lawyer of GYLA, Tamta Tsveraidze, the Parliament shall make a decision regarding the candidates proposed by the President within 14 calendar days. This period started on September 6. ISFED also responded to the issue and called on the Parliament to staff the CEC in a timely manner.
