Yesterday's decision of the European Union is really a very negative dynamic on the path to Georgia's EU integration, the former Ambassador of Georgia to the Kingdom of Denmark and the Republic of Iceland, expert Gigi Gigiadze, said at the meeting of Georgian career diplomats.
Gigiadze voiced the general address of the diplomats. According to the statement, the Georgian Government met this unique and historic opportunity completely unprepared and instead of intensively working with European partners, it intensified anti-European rhetoric.
"Unfortunately, as expected, the European Council fully shared the recommendation of the European Commission and granted EU candidate status only to Ukraine and Moldova, while it set specific preconditions for Georgia. It is very unfortunate that by the mentioned decision Georgia has been separated from the Associated Trio and the group of leaders of the EU Eastern Partnership Initiative, where it was a leading country and the best reformer a few years ago. From the very first day of the restoration of Georgia's independence, the main task of Georgian diplomacy has been the rapid return of Georgia to the European family and the irreversible integration of our country into the Euro-Atlantic space.
It is extremely unfortunate that the Georgian Government met this unique and historic opportunity completely unprepared and, instead of working intensively with our European partners, intensified its anti-European rhetoric," the diplomats say in the statement.
According to them, the Government did not allow diplomats to ensure the best results for our country.
"Unfortunately, the Government neutralized Georgian diplomacy and did not allow diplomats to ensure the best results for our country. We hope that Georgian diplomacy will be able to take all measures to ensure Georgia's full integration into the European Union. All diplomats who care about the country's European future can join this statement," reads the statement.
