Georgian Parliament Speaker: unlike NGOs, funding of Georgian Dream party is transparent

05.04.24 16:20

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday said unlike domestic non-governmental organisations, the ruling Georgian Dream party's funding was transparent.

Papuashvili’s comments followed after the parliamentary majority on Wednesday decided to resubmit the bill on the transparency of foreign influence to the legislative body. The bill provides for a requirement that organisations receiving foreign funding publish their annual financial reports.

“Unlike NGOs, the funding of the Georgian Dream party is transparent. Our income and expenses are transparent”, Papuashvili said.

Georgian Parliament last year retracted the bill on the transparency of foreign influence amid a backlash by domestic opposition, civil sector and diplomatic representations in the country.

The bill on the transparency of foreign influence aims to ensure that NGOs disclose their annual financial reports, with penalties limited to financial sanctions for non-compliance.
