Parliament Speaker claims EU’s “lack of merit-based decisions” in Georgia’s integration

22.03.24 18:07

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Friday claimed the European Union was being “reluctant” to open accession talks with the country, an alleged stance he called “unfair”.

Papuashvili claimed Georgia was the “leader in absolutely all parameters” related to integration compared to Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“[In] statements and decisions of the European Council, it is welcome that we enjoy strong support. At the same time, we saw the decision to open accession talks with Bosnia and Herzegovina”, the lawmaker said in comments on the move reported on Friday.

“As of today, there is a decision regarding Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which once again shows the unfairness of the decisions [in contrast with Georgia]”, Papuashvili said.

Georgia, which is the leader in absolutely all parameters compared to all three countries, has been mistreated. This injustice on the part of the European Union is very unfortunate and shows once again that, unfortunately, decisions are not based on merit. I hope that the European Union will ultimately make a fair decision regarding Georgia this year”, he continued.

Papuashvili added the Georgian Government was “working to convince” the European Union that “merit-based decisions should be made”.
