Jury finds two former security officials under UNM Gov’t guilty of premeditated murder of Brigade Sergeant of Georgian armed forces

A jury of the Tbilisi City Court on Wednesday found two individuals guilty of unlawful detention and premeditated murder of Roin Shavadze, a Brigade Sergeant of the Georgian armed forces, under the United National Movement Government in 2008.

 

Ali Baladze, the former Deputy Head of the Constitutional Security Department of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, was found guilty of organising Shavadze's unlawful detention and murder and Mamuka Beridze, a former member of special task forces, was found guilty of Shavadze's unlawful detention and murder perpetrated by a group.

 

The jury found Baladze and Beridze guilty of the following counts: abuse of power, violence, use of weapons, insult, organisation of premeditated murder.

 

The Tbilisi City Court sentenced both defendants to 12 years in prison.

 

Shavadze was killed on August 16, 2008. The investigation revealed that Shavadze was first beaten in a public café in Georgia's Black Sea resort town of Batumi by a group of officers of the the Constitutional Security Department of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.

 

Shavadze received injuries “threatening his life” and causing him to fall unconscious, before being driven to a spot near the Kobuleti-Kakuti highway in the west of the country, where he was shot 40 times and killed.
