Parliament will likely no longer elect a new Public Defender with the same rule under which 19 Ombudsman candidates were selected

Parliament will likely no longer elect a new Public Defender with the same rule under which 19 Ombudsman candidates were selected.

In 2022, the temporary rule for the election of the Public Defender will expire, on the basis of which the chairman of the Parliament created a 9-member group for the evaluation of candidates, and which specified criteria in the regulations regarding the candidates who applied to become the Public Defender. According to the same temporary rule, the number of candidates for Public Defender should not have been less than 7.

This is the temporary norm that was valid until 2022. According to the basic norm of the regulation, candidates for the position of Public Defender are presented to the Parliament by a faction and a group of no less than seven non-faction MPs.

The Parliament elects the Public Defender with a three-fifths majority of the full composition.

Parliament failed to elect a new Public Defender at today's extraordinary session. At least 90 votes were needed to elect the Public Defender, although no party has this number of votes in the Parliament. The parties could not agree on a common candidate. As a result, none of the candidates could get 90 votes and none of the candidates were elected.
