According to Giorgi Kalandarishvili, the chairman of the CEC, it is not logical for the Administration of the President to talk about the fact that his candidacy for the position of the chairman of the CEC might not have a wide political consensus, when there was also talk about his "professionalism and qualifications".
According to Kalandarishvili, "from the explanation made by the President's Administration, it was clear that this was a politically motivated decision based on the fact that they were pointing to the absence of a broad consensus".
"It is certainly not logical for this institution to talk about the fact that the candidate did not have a broad political consensus in parallel when there was also talk about my professionalism and qualifications, given that the issue of consensus is decided in the legislative body. Given the growing momentum of supporters in the last two competitions, it would be right if I was given an opportunity in the legislature once again. Unfortunately, I was not given this opportunity," said Giorgi Kalandarishvili.
When asked whether he will take part in the competition again if the Parliament does not support any of the candidates nominated by the President for the post of CEC chairperson, Kalandarishvili says that he will make a decision "after the relevant statement from the President and as a result of the analysis of the circumstances".
"The competition is still going on, committee hearings and voting should be held at the session. Naturally, until there is a concrete result, it is not correct to make any assessment. But if the competition ends in such a way that no candidate will be elected, we have to wait for the development of events, the relevant statement from the President and I will make a decision as a result of the analysis of these circumstances," said Giorgi Kalandarishvili.
For information, the acting chairman of the CEC, Giorgi Kalandarishvili, was not among the candidates presented to the Parliament by the President. The President submitted the candidacies of Tamar Alfaidze and Revaz Egadze to the Georgian Parliament for the position of CEC chairperson.
