The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia releases a statement on the investigation launched in connection with the confrontation on the territory of the US Embassy.
According to the agency, on June 30 of this year, the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia started an investigation into the facts of violence and threats at the official reception held on the territory of US Embassy which involved the members of the Parliament of Georgia.
In addition, the Prosecutor's Office explains that before the investigation into the incident, the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia was in active communication with the relevant representatives of the United States Embassy in order to resolve the existing legal issues, including regarding possible spread of Georgian legislation on the territory belonging to the Embassy to conduct investigative and procedural actions necessary to study the given incident.
"On July 15 of this year, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, the Prosecutor's Office received a note from the Embassy of the United States of America in Georgia, in which they express their readiness, taking into account the diplomatic immunity of the Embassy and Embassy staff, to cooperate with the relevant agencies of Georgia through diplomatic channels regarding the investigation of the incident that occurred on June 30, on the territory of the diplomatic mission.
After receiving the mentioned note, the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia started an investigation into the criminal case, on which all the necessary investigative and procedural actions will be actively carried out," the agency explains.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the investigation was started based on the statement of Vakhtang Tsereteli, the founder of LLC TV Pirveli, in which he pointed to the alleged violence committed against him by the members of the Parliament of Georgia. Anri Okhanashvili, a member of the Parliament of Georgia, also submitted a statement to the Prosecutor General's Office of Georgia, indicating the alleged threats made against him by Vakhtang Tsereteli. Within the case, the message of the member of the Parliament of Georgia, Levan Mgaloblishvili, was also received, in which he pointed to the fact of alleged violence against him.
"Since all the facts noted in the statements of the above-mentioned persons are related to the fact of violence and threats that took place on June 30 at the official reception on the territory of the United States Embassy in Georgia, they will be studied as part of this criminal case.
At 18:00, Vakhtang Tsereteli, the founder of LLC TV Pirveli, was summoned to the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia for questioning as a witness.
The public will be further informed about the results of the investigation. At the same time, we express our readiness to fully cooperate with the Embassy of the United States of America in Georgia in the process of fully investigating the fact that occurred on June 30, on their territory," reads the statement.
