I urge the Georgian Parliament to contribute to the EU membership - cooperation between various parties is essential in order to our success, Lukas Mandl, Deputy Head of the Security and Defence Subcommittee, said at the news conference.
According to him, a questionnaire is the beginning of the path to EU integration and much needs to be done by decision makers.
"Today is the day of handing over the questionnaire to Georgia by the European Union. This is the beginning and we will have more beginnings in the future on the path to European integration. This is the beginning when the questionnaire needs to be filled in. A lot needs to be done, especially by Georgian decision-makers, on behalf of citizens and in the interests of Georgia.
It is obvious what is needed for EU membership. There is no clear, pre-designed model. We know that there are treaties, legislation, which are the axis of the EU and when the EU talks about values, democracy, rule of law, human rights, all this has its additional complementary ideas, opinions, which we try to establish in our parliamentary work, in the European Parliament, as much as possible. Therefore, I am honored to have the privilege of meeting high-ranking officials in Georgia, the President, the Prime Minister, and it is very important to me that we had a meeting with members of the Georgian Parliament, representatives of political groups in the Parliament. It is very important for us to promote Georgia’s prospect of joining the EU. This, of course, is the task of the Government, but the function of the real Parliament is to be an integral part of decisions and resolutions. Therefore, I call on the Georgian Parliament to contribute to the EU membership and to do its best. Cooperation between various parties is very important in order to succeed," said Lukas Mandl.
