Ruling party MP: Ex-president’s hunger strike aims to boost motivation among UNM supporters

29.10.21 13:30

The ruling party lawmaker Guram Macharashvili believes that ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s continuing hunger strike aims to boost motivation among supporters of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party for the October 30 runoff municipal elections.

Macharashvili told reporters that Saakashvili’s issue is not the government’s priority. “Saakashvili is a prisoner, and it is his right to choose hunger strike as a protest form. The medical group will ensure that his health is not at risk,” he said.

According to Macharashvili, not a single visitor advised the ex-president to stop the hunger strike, which means that the UNM party does not treasure human life.

Law enforcers arrested Mikheil Saakashvili in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on October 1 and sent him to N12 Rustavi prison. Ex-president has been on a hunger strike since the very first day of his arrest.
