26.05.20 9:55

Today, May 26, Georgia celebrates Independence Day.

By the resolution of the National Council, on May 26, 1918, Georgia was declared an independent republic. Noah Jordan was elected President of the Republic. On May 26, 1918, the Act of State Independence of Georgia was adopted.

The Democratic Republic of Georgia, whose independence was recognized by leading European countries, ceased to exist less than three years after the occupation by Soviet Russia.

Georgia was able to regain its independence 70 years later, on April 9, 1991.

Due to the global pandemic, large-scale events marking Georgia's Independence Day will not be held this year. However, Georgia celebrates May 26 with a solemn event in all infantry brigades of the Defense Forces.
