Mikheil Sarjveladze: I do not like the idea of creation of a fact-finding commission, the Parliament is not a place to discuss or react to the legality of the actions of judicial officials

Mikheil Sarjveladze, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Parliament, is not in favor of the creation of a fact-finding commission and says that the Parliament is not the place where the legality of the actions of judicial officials should be discussed.

As Sarjveladze told journalists, if there are any preconditions for sanctions, the public has the right to have information.

"The information from open sources alone, where we hear criticism about individual judges by NGOs or alleged problems in the judicial system, is not enough, and of course, the public has the right to know what the reason or prerequisite for this decision was.

As for the creation of a fact-finding commission, I do not like this idea. The Parliament is not a place to discuss or react to the legality of the actions of judicial officials. This will undermine the principle of independence of the judiciary. The judiciary should always be independent from the executive and legislative-political authorities", said Mikheil Sarjveladze.

According to him, the reason for the decision made by the United States of America should be explained, because there are unanswered questions in society.

"When a decision is taken against specific persons, the reason must be explained. There are many unanswered questions in the public, including that if it is a legal duty in the United States to sanction those who they do not like in the judiciary, why was it not done before 2012 when, as all of Europe agrees, the court was incomparably worse? - Mikheil Sarjveladze said.

In addition, when asked whether the decision of the US is expected to have a negative effect on the candidate status, Sarjveladze said that "when no reference is made to specific grounds, it cannot have a negative impact on the decision to be made by the European Commission".
