Georgian Manganese Company and the protesters have reached an agreement. Locals of Khukruti village of the western Georgian region of Imereti have ceased the hunger strike. Georgian Manganese reported on Thursday.

“As a result of constructive negotiations, the parties agreed that damage estimate could be carried out according to the existing model that is recorded in the memorandum signed between the locals and the company, or by the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau upon locals’ request,” the company said in a statement.

Protesters demanded Georgian Manganese compensate them for the damages to their homes that they allege have been caused by mining activities performed by Shukruti+ company, a contractor of the Georgian Manganese. Some of the Shukruti protesters sew their lips shut as a radical form of protest. Shukruti protesters demanded fair compensation based on property value estimates carried out by the Levan Samkharauli National Forensics Bureau. On May 29, Georgian Manganese declared it was ready to allow damage estimate by Samkharauli Bureau.
