Archil Talakvadze: The door is open for the opposition parties to participate in the fact-finding commission

17.02.21 13:55

According to the decision of the Bureau, the issue of establishing a fact-finding commission to study the October 31 parliamentary elections will be discussed at today's plenary session of the Parliament.

As Chairman of the Parliament Archil Talakvadze stated at the sitting of the Bureau, supporting the issue at the plenary session does not mean the final formation of the commission.

"Before setting up the commission, I would like to make it clear once again that the door is open for the opposition parties that are already in parliament, as well as for the opposition that is not yet involved in the parliamentary process, to participate in the commission. We also appeal to all interested parties who have competence in the field of elections to participate in the work of this commission, as permitted by the regulations. Let us all check together the questions and claims that the opposition has regarding the elections. International observers have made it clear that the election was conducted in a competitive environment, where fundamental rights were protected. So it is in everyone's interest, together with the ruling team, the opposition, and civil society, to verify whether there were any real flaws," said Archil Talakvadze.

He also welcomed the establishment of a working group and the agenda set by this group on electoral reform.

"Electoral reform will undoubtedly be important in order to hold the local self-government elections in an even better environment and with better legislation. This, I think, will help increase trust”, he said.
