If the Georgian Dream imposes sanctions for violations and thus tries to avoid the violations, we will not go against it, - Nino Burjanadze, leader of the United Georgia party, told journalists when commenting on the Georgian Dream initiative.
According to Burjanadze, the opposition does not have the resources to coerce voters, intimidate them or violate the secrecy of casting a vote.
"The initiative announced today does not really change anything. There is a specific indication in the law that these actions are punishable. Tightening is more aimed at earning points. The actions listed by Mr. Archil Talakvadze can be carried out only with the instructions and efforts of the government.
The opposition does not really have the resources to intimidate voters. Only the government can use all this against the socially vulnerable, or people who work in state institutions.
If the Georgian Dream imposes sanctions for violations and thus tries to avoid the violations, we will not go against it.
But, there is one very important point. The Parliament is starting to discuss the election legislation, which is very good. We have a very important initiative authored by Eka Beselia and the whole opposition supports it. Our initiative is one of the best opportunities for holding democratic elections, which pertains to repeated counting of votes in the disputed precincts.
I want to hope that the government will be wise enough to consider this initiative together with its own initiative in the Parliament, "- said Burjanadze.
The Georgian Dream proposed making amendments to the Election Code, according to which, strict sanctions will be imposed in case of coercion and intimidation of voters or violation of secrecy of casting a vote. Archil Talakvadze, Chairman of the Parliament, spoke about the initiative at a press conference today, noting that the Code will also indicate that a person will be held criminally liable in case of committing such a violation.
