There is a danger that the Georgian Dream will use the toughened legislation against the opposition, said Salome Samadashvili, one of the leaders of the United National Movement.
According to her, Georgian Dream is going to create an illusion in the eyes of the observer organizations that they will eliminate the problems observed during the last elections.
"I think this is just an attempt to create an illusion in the eyes of international observer organizations that the Georgian Dream is going to act differently in this election and eliminate the main problems observed in the previous elections. The government has not investigated any previous cases of violence and bribery.
Moreover, in the context of selective and politically motivated justice, there is a danger that the Georgian Dream will use the toughened legislation against the opposition and not for holding truly free and fair elections," Samadashvili said.
She also responded to the statement of the Speaker of Parliament of Georgia, according to which, the Georgian Dream will have the majority and form the next government.
According to Salome Samadashvili, the Georgian Dream is well aware that the change of the government is inevitable in the 2020 elections.
“It is unclear how a party with 30% rating at best can form a government? I think the Georgian Dream knows very well that these elections will lead to fundamental political changes in the country and will result in the replacement of the government," said Salome Samadashvili.
The Georgian Dream proposed making amendments to the Election Code, according to which, strict sanctions will be imposed in case of coercion and intimidation of voters or violation of secrecy of casting a vote. Archil Talakvadze, Chairman of the Parliament, spoke about the initiative at a press conference today, noting that the Code will also indicate that a person will be held criminally liable in case of committing such a violation.
