Election barrier to be canceled for 2020 parliamentary elections

24.06.19 13:00

The 2020 parliamentary elections will be conducted with zero election barrier, - Bidzina Ivanishvili, Chairperson of the Georgian Dream Democratic Georgia, said at a breifing today.

"I would like to remind the public that the Georgian Dream was the initiator of the constitutional reform, according to which, proportional elections better respond to the European standard of multi-party and therefore pluralist political representation. However, it was also decided that transition to this electoral system would be more correct in 2024, since it would allow strengthening of parties, their crystallization around values, more consolidation and competitiveness. This is why we chose 2024 as the optimal term, especially given that the current mixed electoral system is absolutely democratic, which has been tested in many traditional democratic countries. However, life constantly brings changes and it is the obligation of any responsible governing political force to be adequate to the challenges facing the country and most importantly, to understand the voice of the public," said Bidzina Ivanishvili.
