EU Ambassador: At the moment when EU-Georgia relations should be at the highest level, we are, unfortunately, at the lowest point

At the moment when EU-Georgia relations should be at the highest level, we are, unfortunately, at the lowest point, - the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia,Paweł Herczyński, said this at the international conference entitled "Enlargement of the European Union - geopolitical need and further steps for the candidate countries of the European Union" in Tbilisi."The ministers agreed to transfer our financial support, which we have been providing to Georgian governments for many years, from direct budgetary support to civil society and media support. As you know, our support to Georgian governments has always been ten times more than the support of civil society and media. We are now shifting direct government support to civil society and media support. The first victim of this decision, if I may say so, will be the Georgian Defense Forces, and this is personally disappointing for me, because in my previous position as the person responsible for the security and defense of the European Union, I really fought for many years for Georgia to be one of the "European Peace Foundation" to be the biggest beneficiary. Together with my colleagues, we fought for the support of the Defense Forces of Georgia to be bigger and bigger every year, and this has been going on for the last few years. We started with 12 million, we moved to 20 million, we reached 30 million, and this year the support has been stopped," said Paweł Herczyński.

The ambassador of the European Union in Georgia noted that this is the first step and there will be further steps as well."We, of course, have contractual obligations, we do not want to harm the civil society, we do not want to harm the population of Georgia, and many of our programs are aimed at the most vulnerable groups of Georgia. So there is a discussion in Brussels about how to do this, but the course is clearly this, and I say this with a heavy heart, because at the moment when our relationship, the EU-Georgia relationship, should be at the highest level, we are unfortunately at the lowest point", noted Paweł Herczyński.
