According to the UN Refugee Agency, there are 120 million refugees in the world, which is a record high figure. 47 million of them are children, and 2 million are born in refugees. According to the UN, 68 million people are internally displaced persons. 32 million people are under the protection of the mandate of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. 7 million are asylum seekers, 6 million are persons in need of international protection, and 6 million are Palestinian refugees who are also under the protection mandate of the UN agency. About 1.3 million of them are in the Palestinian territories.

 

Afghanistan, Syria, Venezuela, Ukraine and South Sudan are the five countries from which the most refugees flow. Their number exceeds 26 million.

 

Colombia, Germany, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey are the five countries that shelter the most refugees. Their number in these countries is 14.6 million.

 

Out of 120 million refugees, 47 million are children.

 

It should be noted that in 2003 the number of refugees in the world was 39 million, in 2013 this figure was 51 million.

 

World Refugee Day is celebrated on June 20.
