Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Committee on Procedural Issues and Rules, on Wednesday claimed that some representatives of the European Union were driven by political goals towards Georgia, which “are not related to the country's European path, but to the balancing of internal political forces”.

In his remarks, Kadagishvili stressed that the interference in the domestic legislative process from abroad was “unacceptable”.

“In this case, they are driven by political goals towards Georgia, which are not related to the country's European path but to the balancing of internal political forces. This kind of interference is unacceptable. The interference is based on the fact that the legislative process is underway. When you interfere in this process like this, of course, this is interference”, Kadagishvili said.

The European Council President Charles Michel on Tuesday said that the transparency bill did not correspond to Georgia's European aspirations and accession trajectory.

Georgian Parliament last year retracted the bill on the transparency of foreign influence amid a backlash by domestic opposition, civil sector and diplomatic representations in the country.

The only change in the resubmitted bill would concern replacing the term “agent of foreign influence” with “organisation pursuing the interests of a foreign power”.

The bill on the transparency of foreign influence aims to ensure that NGOs disclose their annual financial reports, with penalties limited to financial sanctions for non-compliance.
