According to the initial report of the International Student Assessment Program PISA 2022, compared to 2018, the mathematics score of 15-year-old students in Georgia decreased by 8 points, the reading score - by 6 points, while the score in science subjects increased by 1 point. According to gender, the results of girls outperform the achievements of boys.

The information about the results of the research is published by the National Center for Assessment and Examinations.

As noted in the information, the purpose of the initial report is to get to know with the results of 15-year-old students of Georgia in the PISA 2022 cycle in the fields of reading, mathematics, and science.

"In 2022, Georgian students are represented with 390 points in mathematics, 374 points in reading and 384 points in science subjects. According to the short-term analysis of average achievement, compared to 2018, achievement in mathematics decreased by 8 points, in reading - by 6 points, and in science subjects increased by 1 point. None of these changes are statistically significant.

According to PISA 2022, 34% of students achieved basic level 2 in mathematics, which is significantly lower than the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) country average (OECD average: 69%). About 33% achieved reading level 2 or higher in reading (OECD average: 74%) and about 35% in science (OECD average: 76%)," the National Center for Assessment and Examinations reports.

Regarding results by school type, location, test language and student gender, according to the report, an analysis of PISA 2022 results by school type (private-public) shows that students in private schools achieve statistically significantly higher results compared to public school students, both in mathematics (private - 445, public - 384), as well as in reading (private - 426, public - 369) and natural sciences (private - 436, public - 379).

"Depending on the location of the school, in PISA 2022 students living in Tbilisi stand out with high results in mathematics (417 points), then students from other cities (383 points) and students living in rural areas (369 points). Students living in the boroughს have the lowest results (344 points). There are similar results in reading and science;

According to the PISA 2022 results, boys (387 points) and girls (393 points) in Georgia performed math tasks at a similar level on average. In reading, girls were 35 points better than boys (girl - 392 points, boy - 357 points). In science subjects, girls got 14 points more (391 points) than boys (377 points);

Georgia was included in the list of countries participating in PISA 2022, where the results of girls by gender outperform the achievements of boys. Brunei, North Macedonia, Philippines, Morocco, Albania, Palestine, Mongolia, Baku (Azerbaijan), Dominican Republic, Finland and 6 other countries have similar data to Georgia;

According to the achievement levels in Georgia, the share of low mathematics scores is similar among boys (67%) and girls (66%). However, this proportion in reading is higher for boys (59% of girls and 74% of boys below reading level 2). As for the students with the highest results, the share of boys (1%) and girls (1%) in mathematics is similar;

In all three areas of assessment according to the language of test performance, in 2015-2022, students of Georgian and Russian-language schools show statistically high results. According to PISA 2022 data, the achievements of Azerbaijani-speaking students are statistically significantly lower than the results of these two groups. The difference between Georgian-speaking and Azerbaijani-speaking students in mathematics is 73 points, in reading - 80 points, and in science subjects - 81 points," the report says.

Regarding the results of the study according to the PISA socio-economic index, only 7.3% of students in Georgia were in the bottom fifth of the PISA socio-economic scale, which means that they were among the most disadvantaged students who participated in the 2022 cycle.
