Zurab Japaridze: We should get as many signatures as possible from the citizens of Georgia and show the relevant EU structures that the will of the citizens of this country differs from the de facto government’s course

The Government will most likely support the "Foreign Agents" draft law, therefore, we thought of a way to somehow convey the voice of the Georgian population to the institutions in whose hands it is to make a decision regarding the candidate's status at the end of the year. We decided to collect one million signatures, said Zurab Japaridze, chairman of Girchi More - Freedom, when he spoke about the importance of launching a new campaign "A million signatures for the European Union".

According to him, now is a historical moment when the country has a choice to make.

According to Japaridze, we are all waiting for another decision on candidate status from the European Union at the end of the year, and taking into account how the current de facto government of Georgia is behaving, the chances of getting this status are decreasing day by day.

"Despite the criticism from practically all Western institutions and leaders, and we are told directly, literally, that if the Government adopts this bill, it will be a rejection of the EU and Euro-Atlantic integration, the Government still continues to consider this bill and will most likely support it. Therefore, one of the ways we have come up with is to bypass the Government and somehow convey the voice of the Georgian population to the institutions in whose hands it is to make a decision regarding candidate status at the end of the year. We decided to collect one million signatures. This is not a party initiative, a lot of people are involved here, and we wish to involve the general public, be it civil sector, media, political parties or others. It is everyone's job that by the end of the year, before the status issue is discussed in the relevant structures of the European Union, we should get as many signatures as possible from the citizens of Georgia and show them what the will of the citizens of this country really is and that it differs from the current de facto government’s course", said Zura Japaridze.
