The Georgian people and their government, who have no military or economic protection of NATO or the European Union, are uncompromising in their support for Ukraine, facing life-threatening risks, - the Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia, Shalva Papuashvili, said during a speech at the event dedicated to the anniversary of the war in Ukraine at the Orbeliani Palace.
According to him, Ukraine of 2022 should not become Georgia of 1921.
"Today a year has passed since the start of Russian aggression against Ukraine. A year of destruction, pain, thousands of dead civilians, ruined present and future for millions of people, the biggest aggression of our generation. At the same time, tomorrow marks 102 years since the annexation of the First Republic of Georgia by the Red Army, when the world turned a blind eye to the suppression of the freedom aspirations of Georgia and other nations. After 102 years, history is repeating, the world is facing the same challenge in the form of a war in Ukraine, but the same mistake should not be repeated, Ukraine of 2022 should not become Georgia of 1921. Georgia has stood by Ukraine and the Ukrainian people since the beginning of the war. The Georgian people and their government, who have no military or economic protection of NATO or the European Union, are uncompromising in their support for Ukraine, facing life-threatening risks. We expressed the solidarity and support of the Georgian people to our Ukrainian colleagues in Kyiv, during our visit to Bucha and Irpin. The Parliament of Georgia hosted several groups of children from war-affected families. For many Ukrainians, before the restoration of peace in Ukraine, Georgia has become a second homeland. This support will continue unwaveringly in the future.
Yesterday, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution co-authored by us, and in the spirit of this resolution, we demand from here that Russia immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine and respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders. I wish Ukraine and the Ukrainian people victory in the heroic struggle for freedom. Слава України!", Papuashvili said.
