Giorgi Sioridze, the oppositional deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission, appeals to the Parliament of Georgia to immediately start the process of electing the chairman and 2 members of the Commission, because, in his estimation, the legislation is being grossly violated.

As Sioridze told journalists, there is a legitimacy crisis in the Election Commission.

"Today, the main agenda in Georgia is related to the 12 recommendations of the European Union. A very intensive process has been started in the country regarding one of the points, the electoral reform. This important process is harmed by the legitimacy crisis in the Election Commission of Georgia, which is related to the status of the current chairman and two members of the Central Election Commission. As you know, on August 15, the 6-month term of office expired for the mentioned persons. After that, the President of Georgia announced the competition and submitted candidates selected in full compliance with the legislation to the Parliament for election. The Parliament had a 14-day deadline for the election, however, the Parliament did not put this issue to the vote, which is a very important legal problem. The Parliament should have elected the candidates or reject them. This violates not only the fundamental principle of the Constitution of Georgia - the principle of the rule of law, but also the constitutional right of the candidates who have been waiting for months. I call on the Parliament of Georgia to immediately carry out the procedures stipulated by the legislation, which will allow us to get out of this illegal situation", said Sioridze.

In addition, Sioridze said that the chairman of the CEC is not violating the law and the responsibility for the violation of the law rests solely with the Parliament.

According to him, candidates can appeal to the Constitutional Court as Article 25 of the Constitution has been violated.
