MEP Mikser says compromised text of annual report expresses support for Georgia's EU aspirations

“We have managed to produce a compromised text that reflects the common ground and expresses our support for Georgian peoples’ European inspirations,” MEP Sven Mikser remarked on the adoption of the annual report on Georgia with compromise amendments by the European Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee.

According to him, the text adequately reflects the progress of the Association Agreement and EP’s opinions on what needs to be done by the Georgian authorities to meet the legitimate hopes and aspirations of the population.

“It’s been a tough process of negotiating. I would like to thank all shadows (shadow rapporteurs) for the very constructive approach to this. I think that we have managed to produce a compromised text that reflects the common ground and expresses our support for Georgian peoples’ European inspirations.

It adequately reflects the progress in the Association Agreements as well as the Parliament’s feeling of what needs to be done by Georgian authorities in order to actually deliver on those legitimate hopes and aspirations of the people.

I think that it also reflects justified criticism with regard to the conduct of Georgian authorities in a number of policy areas, but I believe that Georgian people can be assured that the European Parliament fully stands behind the request for European integration,” Sven Mikser stated.

The EP’s Committee on Foreign Relations adopted Sven Mikser’s annual report on Georgia with compromise amendments on Tuesday. 47 MEPs voted in favour, five opposed the document, and two abstained.
