29 years after the fall of Sukhumi, the pain that followed the Russian-backed massacre is palpable, reads the statement of the US Embassy to Georgia.

 

"This is the pain that was left in the hearts of the loved ones of tens of thousands of victims, and the pain that hundreds of thousands of displaced people live with every day. We always see in their eyes that their home is so close and yet so far.

 

On September 27, 1993, Sukhumi fell.

 

Glory to the heroes!" the statement reads,

For information, today marks 29 years since the fall of Sokhumi. The military conflict in Abkhazia started on August 14, 1992 and lasted for 13 months and 13 days.
