According to the Special Penitentiary Service, the information spread through the media regarding the deterioration of the health condition of the convicted Mikheil Saakashvili and the improper medical care are unfounded and an attempt to mislead the public.

"Considering the high public interest, we explain that M. Saakashvili has been under intensive 24-hour supervision since the day he was placed in the penitentiary system, he has been provided with all necessary medical services, under the direct supervision of a doctor and on-site medical staff, various doctors are consulting him (psychologist, dermatologist, urologist, hematologist, gastroenterologist, neurologist, cardiologist). Has been prescribed and supplied with appropriate medical treatment, which is reflected in the medical card of the facility.

It is noteworthy that the convict selectively refuses a number of examinations, including magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, neurologist-prescribed treatment, a course of psychotherapy, and recommended physical activity. According to the Detention Code, like any other accused / convict, M. Saakashvili is given the opportunity to be in the fresh air in the walking area provided by the penitentiary institution for at least 1 hour a day, but the convict himself refuses to use this right.

During his stay in the penitentiary system, the convict underwent numerous clinical-laboratory and instrumental examinations, including on March 6 of this year M. Saakashvili underwent PCR testing due to respiratory symptoms, but the coronavirus was not confirmed.

The spread information that the service does not issue a convict M. Saakashvili's medical records is an attempt to mislead the public. We explain that it has been requested by his lawyers a number of times, as well as by several organizations, which is confirmed by various conclusions prepared by them. For information, on March 29 of the current year, at the request of M. Saakashvili's lawyer, relevant medical documentation was issued. Also, copies of the requested medical documentation are in the process of preparation, which will be sent within the timeframe specified by law.

The spread information about the accusation that Saakashvili may be poisoned or intoxicated with drugs is an attempt to discredit the Special Penitentiary Service. In addition, media outlets report that the convict's life is in danger and there will be an attempt to poison him in the future, therefore the Special Penitentiary Service will take all necessary measures in order to ensure accused / convict M. Saakashvili's safety and proper conditions," the statement said.
