US Ambassador: It's very disappointing that the appointment of judges went forward, it's difficult to understand why this needed to be rushed through

It's very disappointing that the appointment of judges went forward, especially when there are so many other priorities that are not being addressed in Parliament, - US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan told reporters.

According to her, it's just hard to explain why this needed to be rushed through, when the same people in Parliament, including the ruling party, agreed that comprehensive judicial reform was needed.

“It's difficult to understand why this needed to be rushed through. There are also five positions, the non-judge positions on the High Council of Justice that have been vacant for four months. There seems to be no urgency to fill those positions, even though they've been vacant for months, and those non-judge positions on the High Council of Justice are supposed to represent the voice of the people of Georgia under your constitution. So again, it's just hard to explain why this needed to be rushed through, when the same people in Parliament, including the ruling party, agreed that comprehensive judicial reform was needed. We hope that Georgians will see a similar urgency to enact comprehensive and inclusive judicial reform in consultation with state leaders”, said the Ambassador.
