The Georgian National Statistics Office, whose roots stretch back to the First Democratic Republic of Georgia, is marking its 100th anniversary today.

Tbilisi is hosting a regional conference today called Gender Statistics: Challenges and Opportunities to Report on the Sustainable Development Goals, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat) and 20 years of collecting gender statistics.

Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze said that the day was emotional for him, as the agency is connected with the First Democratic Republic of Georgia.

Access to objective statistical data is vital for any democratic state. It is an institution which withstood historic turbulence and which employees professionals,” Bakhtadze said.

Bakhtadze stated that the National Statistics Office serves as a source of information for all other state agencies, as they use the official data in their every-day work.
