Yes, the elections in Georgia as a whole have been assessed as competitive and well managed, but the question is whether this is enough for Georgia. Is that enough for a country with European aspiration? - European Parliamentarian Marina Kaljurand said at the webinar on the impact of the 2021 local elections on the relations between Georgia and the European Union.
According to her, if the opposition feels that they do not have enough voice, or just are not strong enough, MEPs will be the voice of opposition, if needed.
“Should the next elections be conducted in a form which is better than just competitive and well managed? Now the elections are over and I very much hope that the political polarization and the political mess should be overcome.
It's time for Georgian politicians to return to normal working routine. Georgia needs a workable parliament. Georgia needs a forum where plenary sessions are not being boycotted, where some parts of the work are not being boycotted, where opposition is present, strong and vocal. And I can assure that we are following from the European Parliament all the discussions and developments in Georgia’s parliament. So if the opposition feels that they do not have enough voice, or just not strong enough, trust us, we are on the side of Georgian democracy, which means that we're following what's happening in the parliament. And we will be also the voice of opposition, if needed. We call for cooperation in the Georgian parliament and return to normal life. There are so many questions Georgia needs to decide starting with COVID pandemic and ending with democratic reforms. You have to start working on that. You just have to stop the polarization and accusations”, said the MEP.
