A communiqué has been published on the official website of the President of the Republic of France about the meeting between the President of the FrenchRepublic and the President of Georgia Salome Zourabichvili at the Triumphal Arch.

According to the Administration of the President of Georgia, on September 28, the President of the French Republic, together with the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili, led the ceremony dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the recognition of Georgia by France in January 1921. As it is mentioned in the information, this special ceremony emphasizes the importance of the relations between the two countries and the special role played by France in the last century in protecting the freedom, territorial sovereignty and independence of Georgia.

"This common history and the close ties established between the French and Georgian peoples are the basis of the special relationship that unites our two countries around the idea of freedom. Its example was the service and sacrifice of Lieutenant Colonel Amilakhvari to Free France in 1942 in El Alamein. The Lieutenant Colonel is known for these words: "We, foreigners can prove our gratitude to France for our acceptance only by death for it."

France, which has stood by Georgia in the most difficult moments of its history, will continue to support it in maintaining stability and strengthening democracy. It reaffirms its commitment to the deeper establishment of fundamental rights in Georgia, namely freedom of the press and the strengthening of democratic and judicial institutions in line with the highest European standards.

France calls on the Georgian authorities to do its best to ensure that the forthcoming municipal elections are in line with the EU's democratic values, norms and standards. France will pay special attention to any attempt aimed at destabilizing the democratic institutions of independent Georgia, directed against the aspirations of the Georgian people and the interests of the European Union.

The President of the French Republic will remain in close contact with the President of Georgia in order to continue working to strengthen ties between the two countries," reads the communiqué.
