A new 51.5 kilometre-long road connecting the Imereti and Racha regions of Georgia opened on September 28.

The Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure carried out the GEL 110 million-worth project. The new road begins from Sachkhere and passes the villages of Sareki, Kvemo Khevi, Uzunta, Shkmeri, Bokva, Kvashkhieti, Zudali, joining the Ambrolauri-Oni road. Highway mainly goes through a forest and river valley, 10 000-15 000 meters above sea level.

The project that was divided into seven segments involved four contracted Georgian vendors and employed 900 people.

According to Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, who attended the opening ceremony, the new Imereti-Racha road will shorten the trip from Tbilisi to Racha to three hours.

“It will benefit not only the Racha residents but domestic and foreign tourists. Three hours will be enough to get from Tbilisi to Racha, which is a tremendous comfort for our citizens,” PM said.
