According to Amiran Gamkrelidze, director of the National Center for Disease Control, the coronavirus infection rate today is three times higher than in May, and the healthcare system is "working on the edge of tension."

At the same time, as Gamkrelidze noted at the briefing after the meeting of the Interagency Coordination Council, the situation is difficult and tense in Georgia, as well as globally, in European countries.

"The epidemiological situation, such as the incidence rate, the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the positive rate is about 3 times higher than we had during the peak of the May wave, on May 17, and about 97% of what we had during the peak of November-December. The number of active cases in the country has exceeded 50 thousand. The number of patients admitted to hospitals is quite high. The health care system is working on the edge of tension, more and more activity is needed in both directions. These include adhering to the recommendations, adding the obligation to wear a mask outdoors, everywhere, unless you are training at Turtle Lake or Lisi Lake. In that case, no one will ask you to wear a mask, if you are alone. Monitoring in restaurants and hosting establishments will be especially tightened. It is recommended to make more use of outdoor spaces. The second main direction is more vaccinations,” Gamkrelidze said.
