Georgian Orthodox Church marks St. Nino’s Day

The Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates St. Nino’s Day on January 27.

 

Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness, and Beatitude Ilia II conducted service at the Sioni Cathedral.

 

“Congratulations to everyone on this glorious holiday, especially to those who bear her name. Our President Salome Zourabichvili bears her name too. May the God give her and Georgia strength,” the Patriarch stated.

 

St. Nino, the Enlightener of Georgia and Equal to the Prophets, preached Christianity in Georgia in the 4th сentury, and then Christianity was declared the state religion.

 

St. Nino’s Day is marked twice a year. June 1 is the day she arrived in Georgia, while January 27 is the assumption day.
