Opposition parties call on Georgian Dream to return to negotiating table in time

26.01.21 17:20

We are still appealing to the Georgian Dream to return to the negotiating table in time and realize that the only way out of thecrisis is to hold early, democratic elections," reads the joint statement of the opposition parties.

According to the statement, the threat to impose punitive sanctions on opposition parties at the legislative level and to prolong the process of terminating mandates will not yield any results.

"We, the democratic opposition parties of Georgia, remain loyal to the position we had after the rigged parliamentary elections, when Ivanishvili seized the will of the Georgian people. The official results of the October 31 parliamentary elections do not reflect the will of the citizens of Georgia, and therefore the recognition of the results of these elections will only lead to complete nihilism towards the political process, which is promoted by the Dream, and distrust in the democratic process.

Despite the differences between the parties boycotting the parliament, we soon agreed on a common position and demands - the release of political prisoners, new elections, new election administration and election rules, changes in the electoral system.

The opposition offered Ivanishvili's government several reasonable compromises to hold early, democratic elections, but they opposed the desire for real dialogue with uncivilized methods. The government seemed to have the illusion that in this way it was forcing the democratic opposition spectrum to abandon its basic demands. This path chosen by the Georgian Dream has suffered a complete failure.

We still appeal to the Georgian Dream to return to the negotiating table in time and realize that the only way out of the crisis is to hold early, democratic elections and to resolve the issues raised by the opposition and, consequently, the majority of voters.

We also state that the threat to impose punitive sanctions on opposition parties at the legislative level and to prolong the process of terminating their mandates will not yield any results," reads the statement signed by the Georgian Labor Party, Lelo, Girchi – More Freedom, European Georgia, Strategy Builder, Power in Unity - Progress and Freedom, National Movement, State for People and Republican Party.
