UN General Assembly adopts resolution on the status of IDPS and refugees from Abkhazia and Tskhinvali region

On September 3, 2020, in New York, at the 74th session, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution submitted by Georgia and 54 countries on the status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia.

 

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, it should be noted that the number of countries supporting the resolution, as well as the number of co-sponsors, has increased this year to 84.

 

Georgia has been submitting the resolution to the UN General Assembly since 2008. The resolution condemns the violent demographic changes in the occupied regions of Georgia, reaffirms the right of IDPs to return to their homes in a dignified and safe manner, regardless of ethnicity, and emphasizes the need to respect and protect their property rights.

 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia thanks all the states that supported the resolution and became the co-author of the initiative.

 

"With this decision, each country reaffirmed its support for the right of IDPs and refugees to return to their homes and expressed support for each of them”, the agency says in its statement.
