According to the Partnership for Human Rights, which protects the interests of Basilashvili's wife, the prosecutor's office approved their request to aggravate the charges against tennis pplayer Nikoloz Basilashvili. According to the information provided by the organization, the evidence obtained during the investigation revealed that Nikoloz Basilashvili had committed numerous acts of gender-based physical violence against his wife, Neli Dorokashvili.
As the organization's statement reads, it was also revealed that Nikoloz Basilashvili had been committing systematic psychological and economic violence on the basis of gender for years, as a result of which Neli Dorokashvili had suffered psychologically.
"As of today, the prosecutor's office accuses Nikoloz Basilashvili of four episodes of physical violence against Neli Dorokashvili on various grounds at different times. The episodes include systematic psychological and economic acts of violence. We would like to note that in addition to the episodes of charges against Nikoloz Basilashvili, in several cases of physical violence, the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution has expired, although these actions should be taken into account when assessing the systemic character and severity of violence. The court hearing on the criminal case of Nikoloz Basilashvili has been scheduled for October 20", - reads the statement.
For the record, the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has charged Nikoloz Basilashvili with physical violence against his ex-wife under Article 126, Part 2, Subparagraph "b" of the Criminal Code of Georgia. According to the Prosecutor's Office, the investigation established that on May 21, 2020, in Avchala settlement, Tbilisi, Nikoloz Basilashvili committed physical violence against his ex-wife N.D. on the grounds of a dispute. Law enforcers arrested Nikoloz Basilashvili on May 22, 2020. The court discussed the measure of restraint against Basilashvili and he was released on bail of 100,000 GEL. The criminal case is under investigation.
