Josep Borrell – EU condemns cyberattack on Georgia and will continue supporting Georgia

The European Union condemns the cyberattack on Georgia and will continue supporting Georgia to strengthen its cyber defense capabilities – reads the statement of the European Union’s High Representative Josep Borrell.

 

Based on the statement, Georgia became a victim of a cyberattack that caused damage to the country’s social and economic infrastructure.

 

Borrell said the EU was concerned about the increased irresponsible destabilizing activities with the use of information technologies that threatened foreign security policy and human rights. “We call on the international community to continue making a contribution in securing international peace and security,” reads the statement.

 

Georgian Foreign Ministry said on February 20 that on 28 October 2019, a large scale cyber-attack was planned and carried out by the Main Division of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

 

Back in October of 2019, the Georgian authorities accused Russia’s military intelligence of launching a large-scale cyberattack that targeted the government and private organizations with the goal of destabilizing the country. A senior Russian diplomat dismissed the accusations.
The attack knocked thousands of websites offline, including those of the president, local government officials, and television channels.
