EU Ambassador to Georgia holding meetings at Georgian Dream office

15.11.19 12:00

Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia Carl Hartzell is holding meetings at the central office of Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party.

The parliament’s turning down of constitutional changes prepared by the parliamentary majority regarding transformation onto the proportional system of elections for 2020 parliamentary polls in Georgia is presumably the main topic of talks.

Bidzina Ivanishvili, Chairman of Georgian Dream Party, Chairman of Parliament Archil Talakvadze and majority MP Irakli Kobakhidze are present in the office.

“I see a clear risk that going back on this commitment at this stage would be seen as breaking the trust among the political parties, the trust with wider segments of the population, and to again increase the polarisation in the run-up to the 2020 elections. I hope the parliament will take this into account in their vote later today,” Hartzell said on November 14.

The constitutional changes prepared by the parliamentary majority regarding transformation onto the proportional system of elections were turned down in the parliament on November 14. Some majority MPs left their parliamentary seats and posts. The oppositional parties and Georgian public representatives turned to the street in protest.
